Antibiotic susceptibility profile of bacilli isolated from the skin of healthy humans BJM
Tarale,Prashant; Gawande,Sonali; Jambhulkar,Vinay.
Abstract In the present work, twelve bacilli were isolated from four different regions of human skin from Bela population of Nagpur district, India. The isolated bacilli were identified by their morphological, cultural and biochemical characteristics. Seven isolates were Gram negative rods, out of which five were belong to genus Pseudomonas. Three among the five Gram positive isolates were identified as Dermabactor and the remaining two Bacillus. Their antimicrobial susceptibility profile was determined by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The isolates showed resistance to several currently used broad-spectrum antibiotics. The Dermabactor genus was resistant to vancomycin, although it was earlier reported to be susceptible. Imipenem was found to be the...

Antimicrobial susceptibility of hospital acquired Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolate biofilms BJID
Sun,Erlin; Liang,Gehong; Wang,Lining; Wei,Wenjie; Lei,Mingde; Song,Shiduo; Han,Ruifa; Wang,Yubao; Qi,Wei.
Abstract Aims We sought to characterize the antibiotic susceptibility of strains of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolated from clinical samples, and the role of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia biofilm in antibiotic resistance. Methods Fifty-one clinical Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolates were obtained from patients with nosocomial infection in the surgical wards and ICUs of six general hospitals in Tianjin, China. In vitro models of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia biofilms were established and confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy with silver staining. The minimal inhibitory concentrations and biofilm inhibitory concentrations of commonly used antibiotics were determined. Results 47 of 51 strains were resistant to three or...

Clostridium difficile infection: main features and occurrence in domestic species in Brazil Ciência Rural
Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Guedes,Roberto Maurício de Carvalho; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
Clostridium difficile is an emerging enteropathogen of humans and domestic animals. The bacterium was recently confirmed to be present in foals and dogs in Brazil, with some recent studies suggesting that C. difficile is one of the most important causes of piglet diarrhea in the country. Moreover, some reports also suggest the transmission of this microorganism between animals and humans, raising the possibility that C. difficile is a zoonotic disease. Therefore, the aim of the present review is to describe the main features of C. difficile infection in domestic animals and outline the occurrence of the disease in horses, dogs and pigs in Brazil.

Molecular typing of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains isolated in two metropolitan areas of São Paulo State, southeast Brazil BJID
Cury,Gisele Gentile; Mobilon,Cristiane; Stehling,Eliana Guedes; Lancellotti,Marcelo; Ramos,Marcelo de Carvalho; Martinez,Roberto; Brocchi,Marcelo; Silveira,Wanderley Dias da.
One hundred and fifty-one methicillin-resistant z (MRSA) strains have been isolated from patients admitted in tertiary care hospitals in two metropolitan areas (Campinas City and Ribeirão Preto City) in the southeast region of Brazil and analyzed through PCR-based techniques [(PCR amplification of spa, coa, and housekeeping genes (arcC, aroE, gmk, pta, tpi, yqiL)] and further restriction fragment typing of coa and of housekeeping genes. The heterogeneity of spa gene was determined directly by agarose gel electrophoresis migration. The results obtained indicate the existence of three (A, B, C) main clusters. Since the strain distribution in these three clusters is much characteristic, it denotes the existence of three main clones. All strains isolated in...

Ramos,Carolina Pantuzza; Vespasiano,Letícia Camêlo; Melo,Isabela Oliveira; Xavier,Rafael Gariglio Clark; Leal,Carlos Augusto Gomes; Facury Filho,Elias Jorge; Carvalho,Antônio Ultimo de; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira.
ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to describe and characterize a nosocomial outbreak caused by a multidrug resistant Salmonella Typhimurium in hospitalized calves at a veterinary medical teaching hospital from Brazil. Sixty-three (96.9%) calves showed lethargy, hyperthermia and profuse diarrhea and despite treatment, 26 (41.2%) animals died. Five animals were necropsied and stool samples of six calves were collected. The isolated strains were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility test by disc-difusion method and were fingerprinted by ERIC-PCR. Macroscopic lesions suggestive of salmonellosis, such as fibrinonecrotic enteritis and hepatosplenomegaly were observed. Salmonellosis was confirmed by isolation of S. Typhimurium from stool samples and organs...
